Quick ways to save energy this summer

Whether you’re trying to look after the planet, your electricity and gas bill or all of the above, here are some of the quick ways you can save on energy this summer.

Turn those lights OFF

We’ve all been guilty of it but the number one rule to saving energy at home is to remember to always switch off lights, TV and other appliances after use. If you have a naughty flatmate who always leaves the telly on after leaving the room (make sure you have a TV Licence, read more here), make a game out of it - create a “Switch off jar” and every time somebody catches a housemate leaving lights or appliances on unnecessarily, they have to put £1 into the jar. You can then use the money either to buy communal cleaning products for the house or do something more fun like get a big takeout one night.

Off vs. standby

Turning your devices off at the plug can save you an average of £30 a year. Having appliances on standby when they are not in use is a waste and will ultimately cost you money so make sure you turn off your plugs after every use.

Keep your thermostat low

Did you know that turning your thermostat down by just 1 degree can save you up to 5% energy? Avoid overheating your property and rather get cosy under a blanket or layer up if needed. Remember that the government-recommended temperature for a home is 21°C but depending on energy rating of your property and other factors you might wish to alter slightly.

Switch up your bath with a shower

Baths tend to use large amounts of hot water compared to a shower as showers are quicker and more efficient. Did you know that cold showers are good for your immune system, sleep, muscle recovery and much more? Try taking one every now and again and benefit not only your energy bill but also your health!

Be mindful of your shower time

Having said that showers are shorter and more efficient, this is of course always up to you. Try to be mindful about the time you spend in the shower on the daily if you want to save energy. Use LED light bulbs instead of regular ones

Exchange your old traditional incandescent light bulbs for more energy-efficient bulbs, such as LEDs or CFLs. Furthermore, you may wish to invest into a dimmer switch, which works well with the new LED light bulbs in order to adjust the used energy when having your lights on.

Wash full loads on a lower temperature

Try to avoid running your washing machine half full. Instead, wait until you have a full load and then wash on a lower temperature if possible. Today’s laundry detergents work just as well in cold water so you can save money. Washing at 30 degrees instead of 40 degrees can be up to a third cheaper, saving you over £50 a year. Remember that a similar rule applies to dishwashers too; use eco cycles if possible.

Make use of your saucepan lids

When boiling water in a saucepan, be sure to put the lid on in order not to lose the heat and steam. Similarly, if you are boiling water in a kettle, only ever boil as much as you actually need, avoiding to use up unnecessary energy to boil 2 litres of water that then just gets cold.

Cook together

Finally, if you live in a shared house, try taking turns to cook for the whole house instead of everyone cooking themselves individual dishes. Not only is it more energy-efficient, but it’s also more social and fun!
